Phantom learning in higher education

On this blog post, I have decided to discuss about Phantom Learning. As you all know, Phantom Learning is using the cyber world for our learning materials and classes rather than going to school. Bryan Alexander says that schools will become rare and interaction between people physically will be minimal. In the year 2022, I will hopefully be out of college and I will be in the work force somewhere with in the military.

What i believe will happen in 2022, is that most, if not all, college course classes and credits will be found online. I believe that public schools will still exist, but will not have as many students as they have today. I say this because the parents who can afford to keep their kids out of school and pay for an in-home/online education will do so, in order to protect their children from the other less wealthy kids. I believe that the inequality between the classes will be so high that their will only be a low-class and a high-class. The crime level in the lower class will reach an all time high, even within the schools. So due to crime and economic issues, public schools will have fewer students but will not be totally diminished.

How my work life would hopefully be in the year of 2022, I hope that I would still have to do many things hands on. I would like to be able to go to work everyday and enjoy doing something somewhat laborious for a few hours. I’m an active person, so I hope that the advancement in phantom learning will not totally diminish the daily activities I love to do. For instance, I enjoy running in scenic places. I wouldn’t want to run on a treadmill within my house looking at holograms of a forest. I believe some things should be left untouched and remain to be all natural, but unfortanently somethings will change. As for how this will affect my future job, I’m not sure. Mainly because I don’t really know what I specifically want to do.

My personal opinion of the phantom learning is that it looks really good to us now, but I believe that this will create a negative affect on the life styles of people. I can imagine the rise of obesity and the lack of physical activity. Unless you can make an AR for fat people in which they eat fake hologram food, then I cant see any good arising from this phantom learning.

Personal Cyberinfrastructure

Being a university student in the digital age, I feel, is more convenient and easier. I use digital media as a tool for endless information, and with today’s technology, it has  been easier than ever to find any information at any given time. As long as a student does not procrastinate, is focused, and dedicated to their studies, then school would be easy and enjoyable. But, there are the majority of the students who have found that this digital age to be full of entertainment and distractions. None the less, with the assistance of today’s technology, access to information is endless and convenient, thus creating an easier and relaxing learning environment for university students.

What I hope to gain from my university experience is knowledge and wisdom that will stay with me for the rest of my years. With today’s digital media, I can make sure that all information that I have learned will stay with me. I have the ability to go beyond my very own memories, and even continue to learn after my university years. With the internet, I have the ability to search and obtain information of things I once knew or did not know about. I  also have the ability to save every document I have ever written or received, and if there is ever a time that I can not find information in the cyber world, then I have the ability to contact any professional in the world to ask information I can not find (via e-mail).

What Gardner had written about LMS did not resonate in me. Although he said that LMS is not progress, I see it as progress. The convenience to find out your grades or what information your professors want you to know makes it easier for the students. But Gardner did go on to speak of a better way for both teaching staff and students could creatively express their learning and cooperation. Although I agree with what Gardner wrote about, I still believe that he undermined the potential and convenience of the LMS system.

Movie scenes that changed my life

Assignment: For this assignment, select scenes from 3-5 movies. These scenes should represent scenes that changed your life or made some sort of dramatic, traumatic, lasting, or emotional impact on you. When you have selected those scenes, create a video that shows the scenes and includes audio/video of you describing what it is about the scene that made a significant impact on you, what you are fond of about the scenes, what scares you, what you remember thinking when you were a child, etc. Feel free to be liberal in your interpretation of the instructions. Keep in mind, however, that the primary point is to recall 3-5 movie scenes that have made a lasting impact on you (whatever the reason for that impact may be.)

Process: Well I have no experience or any knowledge of how to put scenes from other movies into a short film with nothing but my own commentary on the background. But I felt that this assignment was too special to passed up. So I have chosen 5 trailers from 5 movies that has greatly impacted my life, in no particular order.

1. Pursuit of Happiness

This film is one of the most inspiring films I have ever seen. This film has taught me to stop at nothing to achieve my goals. Not only is this film dramatically inspiring, I belive it was one of Will Smith’s best acting ever done on-screen.

2. Marley and Me

Marley and Me was the first movie (and maybe only) movie that I have ever cried watching. I didn’t cry from laughter, I cried because the ending was just too sad. I have a dog too so this movie really got to me. This movie changed my life because it made me realize, I should cherish every moment with those I care about most, because were all gonna die someday.

3. Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump… not much to say about this movie. Probably the best movie made in all time. This movie taught me that you can do a lot in one life time, taught me that anybody you meet might be famous one day, and it has taught me that life is a box of chocolates. It wont last long for fat people.

4. The Truman Show

I’m not sure what this movie taught me, but this was one of the first movies that popped into my head when I started brainstorming my most inspirational movies. I remember being insanely paranoid after I watched this movie as a kid. I would try to run in the middle of the street and see if a car would stop if I held my hand out.

5. The Matrix

The Matrix didnt teach me to dodge bullets or anything, but I did learn what the future holds for the new generation of action movies. But that’s a topic for another blog, this movie does depict what I believe the future of the cyberworld will look like. I believe that the internet will become such a large majority of our lives that we will eventually find a way to upload our brains into the cyberworld. At first, this seems like a good idea, until robots destroy our world, then we prefer to live in a fake world because we know that reality sucks. Much like video games.

Look at that kitchen

The first thing I noticed about this gif was the kitchen. I mean look at that kitchen, its huge. Comparing that kitchen to the ones here in Japan, is like comparing Micheal Jordan to Lebron James. You give Jordan a dollar, he makes 6 NBA championships. You give Lebron a dollar, he gives you 3 quarters back. I mean the size of that kitchen is the size of an average room in an apartment here in Japan.

The yellow walls and the polished, wood tiled floors create a great contrast to one another. The marble counter tops and second refrigerator match very well, but the white refrigerator stands out too much and doesn’t match the atmosphere of the kitchen. The sink being located within the center of the kitchen is a nice and convenient feature. The amount of cabinets present suggests that there is no shortage of storage space within the kitchen. Over-all, that is a beautiful kitchen.

The best part about this GIF, is the stool in the background. That four-legged, white stool is quite a beauty. It seems to be made out of wood and painted by a satin white paint color. By looking at the kitchen, you’d never think that the owners would sit on wooden chairs unless it is an antique of high value. This is where I believe that stool in the back must have been owned by Mir Osman Ali Khan, ruler of Hyderabad in 1911 to 1948. I believe the highlight of this GIF is that beautiful chair.

Assignment:” The assignment is to reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer, let people guess! The challenge is to find the icons that suggest the story, but do not make it so easy.”

The process: I took a few images from Microsoft word and copied it to paint. I used paint to make the whole assignment. The Jordan Jumpman logo came from wikipedia. Everything was copied and pasted on paint, so nothing too fancy, just very simplistic.

Story:

According to the assignment, I am unable to reveal the title of this movie. All I can say is that this movie was the highlight of my childhood. If a hint is needed, then please refer to the image below. I’d write more about this assignment buy I would’nt want to give the tittle of the movie away.

Fresh Prince on Google Maps

The Assignment: “Use Google Maps to tell a story! It can be the story of a trip you took, a trip you would like to take, a strange occurrence, a war, anything you like! The only rules are that you have to use Google Maps proper in order to tell your story ”

The Process: I used google maps for all the images. Instead of creating my own story, I decided to use google maps to depict the story of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. My favorite show as I grew up, and yet still one of the best all time comedies. Please enjoy.

 Story:

Now, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of school

When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said ‘You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air’

I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie ‘Yo homes smell ya later’
I looked to my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

The Lyric is “The Fresh Prince of Bel air” written by Willard Smith and Jeffery Townes.

Tweeting…

The Assignment: “Use the Twister tool from ClassTools (http://classtools.net/twister/) to generate a series of images representing the voices of past figures if they could express themselves in twitter. Notch it up, and recast a historical event with a new plot line, and notch it up again, but making it a back and forth between two figures (use @person!) .”

Process: Well I decided to search the web for pictures and images of people from the past. I was eventually led to webdesigner depot, which is where I took my images from. I then proceeded to use the images as an avatar for these people twitter.

Story:

” Oh @LeonardodaVinci! Paint me like one of your french women.”

“She expects me to paint her when I dont’ even have time to paint myself. #women”

” Hey @IsaccNewton! You mad #trollolol?”

” @StevenHawking, well played my good sir.”

” I wonder who would have won, @ChuckNorris or @BruceLee. #curious”

“@MuhammadAli @ChuckNorris [BruceLee has shared a media, click link to see.] #winning”

Hire a Hacker now!!

I read an article on how easy it is to hire a hacker on the article “Hackers for hire are easy to find“. The article was written by Cassell Bryan-Low, and it was about how a billionaire got his email account hacked by hackers hired by his brother. All his personal information was put on the web for everyone to see. This was done by chinese hackers hired from his rival brother, who had gotten in a feud with him some years ago. This article goes in-depth about who was involved and how they managed to do this.

The Steps to finding a hacker:

1. First acquire a target to hack, such as someone’s email account

2. Find websites such as hack-to-hire.net or other sites through google or Craig’s list.

3. Submit a request for a hacker and what need to be hacked.

4. Pay the fee. The fee can as low as $150.

It’s as easy as that, literally. Most of these hackers than can be hired are found in China, California, and even Korea. Of course this is illegal, not many people have been caught. Hackers can be anywhere, and there is never a shortage of much-needed hackers. This is a scary fact, because I can be a potential target to hackers, and so are you. The website Hack-to-hire has the options to spy on people, and hack major websites such as Yahoo and google. So the good news is, you can find investigators to find your hacker and to retrieve your information. The billionaire who got hacked sued the hackers and his brother. He probably gained more money from that. So if you ever need a hacker, just go online and hire one. In today’s world, everything is easier because of the internet.

Make Kony famous!

This video caught my attention a few days ago. At first I thought that this would be a great video for our cyberspace and society class because these people used the internet as a way to spread information. But as I continued to watch more and more of this video, I learned about Joseph Kony and how we, as the users and the small people, can change the whole system in which we live. I learned how much power we all have and how we can reach out to every part of the world when we really stop at nothing to do it.

I’m not entirely sure about the laws of Japan and putting up posters and stickers around the city, but it’s something im willing to find out the hard way. I’m not the type of person who usually watches a sad commercial and ends up pulling out a credit card to donate, but this really moved me. This short film moved me so much that I have already purchased my kit and I am counting the days until april 20th, 2012. I would write a brief summary of the video, but I would rather have people watch it instead.

The video posted here is a cc license video and is free, more like encouraged, to be shared with as much people as possible. I was thinking of ways to spread this video and WordPress was the best thing I could think of. Share, reblog, retweet, and spread this out to as much people as possible. I have done my part, im just waiting for the days.

Cookieception, enough said.

So as I was brainstorming about what to blog about, an idea came to me as I was walking my dog.  I thought about a great past time I used to do as a culinary student. I called it cookieception, just because I didnt know what the name of this cookie was actally called. The simple way to put it is, it’s a cookie within a cookie.

Alright, heres what you need: An oven, cookie dough, and a pack of oreo’s.

Now for the fun part (instructions): First scoop out a hand full of cookie dough and place it ontop of an oreo cookie. Second, take another scoop of cookie dough and place it on the other side of the oreo and sqiush the two peices together. The rseult should be a sandwhich of cookie dough and oreo. Now bake the cookie to desired consistency, I love my cookies chewy on the outside and gooey in the inside.

Cookieception, enough said.

Now here’s a treat I tired recently, it’s called the Tim Tam Slam.

What you will need: A warm beverage (in my case warm milk), and Tim Tam’s.

Instructions: First take a bite on both sides of the Tim Tam. Next take the Tim Tam and place one bitten edge over the warm beverage, and place your mouth over the other bitten edge. Now such with all your might, and the Tim Tam should act as a straw. As the warm beverage travels through the Tim Tam it will melt, mend, and mush the cookie. This is where you eat the gooey mess and sit there amazed at this cookie inovation. Coffee is highly recommended while trying this, but I believe that every great cookie deserves milk as a partner.

Pictures taken from: here, here, here, and here.

Now this is for those of you who tried the Tim Tam Slam.
